Teenage Relationship Abuse Preventive Education Project

slide06

For the past 2 years our service has been involved with Comic Reliefs national programme to raise awareness of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), which includes – Teenage Relationship Abuse, Sexual Bullying in school and Gender Equalities.

We have been working with a Youth Involvement Group from ChewValleySchool. The group consists of 12 young people from 13 – 16 years of age, who meet up once a week during their lunch break.  Initially the groups focus was to understand the issues of domestic violence, teenage relationship abuse and Gender Equalities. This was done through discussion time, case studies, Government Campaigns and DVD’s. The group then began ‘testing out’ different activities that could be used in PSHE lessons in their school and other schools across B&NES. They were involved in deciding what worked well, what gave the most powerful message and how it should be delivered in class.  The group have considered different teaching styles that they have noticed in their own learning experiences and this is reflected in the pack, whereby the activities are available to use either as a one off activity or part of a whole series of lessons. The end result is a fantastic Violence against Women and Girls Resource Pack which is full of interactive activities for teachers and other professionals to use.

The off the record – Domestic Violence Service team have been piloting these activities in PSHE lessons in 7 schools across B&NES.  We have also held teacher training workshops to introduce the resource pack and the activities to teaching staff to use in their own lessons.

“The feedback from teaching staff, young people and the local authority has been amazing and this is due to the young people who have worked with us, they have been a credit to this project and their hard work and commitment has been outstanding.” (Joan Cooper Development Worker)

“We developed a PSHE Teacher Resource Pack to be used in our PSHE lessons and lessons  in other schools. The pack is full of really fun interactive activities through discussions, case studies, role plays and they really make us think and become aware of these issues. It’s been great fun being part of this group and even better because we know we are doing something worthwhile, I don’t want it to end” (Teacher)
