DAFBY stands for Democratic Action For B&NES (Bath and North East Somerset) Youth. The DAFBY group aims to help develop and strengthen democratic processes which help to communicate the views of young people to decision makers. Members of DAFBY are young people from across B&NES.
DAFBY aims to strengthen the voice of School Councils and helps to organise the Youth Parliament event run in B&NES. They are involved in helping to facilitate the UK Youth Parliament Elections for B&NES and supporting the elected Members of Youth Parliament (MYP’s) with all aspects of their role throughout their term in office.
Through these democratic processes issues that young people feel are important are identified. These range from education and transport to equality and democracy. DAFBY members then explore these issues, plan how they can make a difference in these areas then develop projects, campaign and publicise. DAFBY members receive and deliver training in subjects such as public speaking, decision making and political awareness.
The project provides an inclusive and supportive environment for young people to develop the skills, knowledge, confidence and creative thinking to make informed choices and make a positive contribution.
DAFBY is an active citizenship project that is underpinned by Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which states that young people have the right to have their voices heard in decisions that affect them, directly and indirectly.
